About the Designer

IT background
My name is Alan Copeland and I currently live in North Ballachulish at the head of Glencoe. All my employment before 2003, apart from two years in the bank after leaving school, has been in the field of computing and information technology. I worked my way up over the years through computer operator, programmer, analyst and eventually IT manager. This experience gained over 23 years gave me wide and varied range of skillsets many of which I have been able to utilise in web design.

Career change
In 2003 my wife and I gave up the 'rat race' and bought a coffee shop in Dunkeld. In 2006 we sold that business and bought premises in Aberfeldy which we turned into The Quaich Coffee Shop. When we started this business we decided it would be helpful to have a complementary web site and we started looking around and getting prices from various sources. We were astounded at the prices being charged by most of the web design businesses we contacted.

And back again
We therefore decided to that I should make time to set up the web site on my own. In January 2007 a reasonably basic, straightforward site went live mainly to promote our business but also give tourist information on the town and Highland Perthshire. We were amazed at the response we had within a few months with numerous emails about the site contents and the surrounding area mainly from people who were coming on holiday to the area. And surprise, surprise a large number of them came into the coffee shop when they were in the town. We now get over 300 unique hits a day on our site which isn't too bad for a wee coffee shop in a small town in rural Perthshire. At the end of 2009 we moved to the beautiful Glencoe area.

Now
This made me think of the many other small businesses in the same situation and I decided to do web design on a commercial basis. I have been delighted with the way it has taken off and as far as I am aware all my clients are more than happy with the results.
